Understand your concern

Osteoarthritis & Rheumatoid Arthritis in Thorold

Joint pain and stiffness can make gripping, stairs or getting moving after rest difficult. The type of arthritis and whether symptoms are flaring affect what support is appropriate.

Osteopathic care for joint and movement concerns at Recharge Health

How arthritis can affect everyday movement

Arthritis includes different joint conditions. Osteoarthritis involves changes across the joint; rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune inflammatory condition that needs medical management.

Both can affect comfort and daily function, but they do not need identical care. A warm, swollen joint during an inflammatory flare needs different consideration from stable stiffness and surrounding muscular tension.

Massage and osteopathic care may address associated discomfort and comfortable movement. They do not reverse joint damage or replace treatment intended to control rheumatoid inflammation.

Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis need different considerations

Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis affects the joint and can involve pain, stiffness and changes in movement.

Your appointment may focus on muscular discomfort around an affected joint and activities you find restricted. Hands-on care can be considered alongside an appropriate exercise and activity plan.

Massage does not rebuild cartilage or reverse arthritic changes.

Rheumatoid arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune condition that causes inflammation and can affect more than the joints.

Tell your practitioner about active swelling, warmth, fatigue, medication changes and any guidance from your rheumatology team. Treatment areas, pressure and positioning need to reflect your current symptoms.

Hands-on care is supportive and does not replace treatment intended to control the disease.

Frequently asked questions

Can I receive massage if I have arthritis?

Often, yes, but treatment needs to reflect the type of arthritis, current symptoms and your health history.

Tell your practitioner about affected joints, recent flare-ups, surgery and relevant medical advice so they can assess whether treatment is appropriate.

Should I book during a rheumatoid arthritis flare?

Contact us before attending if joints are actively hot, swollen or unusually painful. Treatment may need to be modified or postponed.

New or significantly worsening joint symptoms should also be discussed with your healthcare provider.

Will massage remove arthritis or repair the joint?

No. Our focus is relevant muscular discomfort, comfort during movement and supporting your functional goals. We do not promise to reverse arthritis or repair damaged cartilage.

Can you work around a joint replacement?

Tell us when the surgery took place and share your surgeon’s or rehabilitation team’s instructions. Timing, positioning and treatment areas will depend on your stage of recovery.

Should I choose massage or osteopathy?

Choose Restorative Massage if you prefer lighter or moderate pressure and a relaxing treatment experience. Choose Targeted Massage when focused muscular care is your priority. Pressure can be adjusted for comfort in either appointment.

Choose osteopathy if you prefer a whole-body manual approach. Consider Integrative Functional Massage if you want an active movement component as well.
